Dispatches: Preparing for Class - PPACA in Medical School

I'm in the midst of preparing for teaching this semester. No topic and/or class has caused me more frustration than my responsibility to teach health reform to the medical students. It is a nearly daunting task. To solve it, I am applying backward design. I'm especially relying on the conceptual model of focusing on understanding and contextualizing rather than knowledge. Trying to fit the topic into three one hour lectures is proving daunting. The recent 11th Circuit opinion and the debt deal/super commission aren't helping matters either.

Needless to say, I'm spending a lot of days simply reading to stay current.

New Site to Track PPACA Litigation: Health Law & Litigation

The National Health Law Program and the O'Neill Institute have created a new site Health Law & Litigation that provides a wealth of information about on-going litigation related to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. I've only preliminarily looked at the site, but it seems to cover in great detail all the current litigation. These resources are great. Especially for teaching these topics in a medical school. You can sign up for email notifications as well.

My only initial complaint is a technical one. Email is, in many ways, a form of communication with a signal-to-noise ratio that continues to get lower. I, like many, use RSS and other forms of syndication to keep updated with websites. As far as I can tell this site has no form of syndication. It also uses Flash, which will cause problems for many mobile users. Other than that, it appears to be a great resource.

I should also mention that at the Annual Health Law Professor's Conference this year, several other sites were also mentioned.

So far, I like the first one, Health Law and Litigation, the most.

ACO and MSSP Proposed Rules: Citation

It took me a while to find it but for my future reference and, if you're looking, the proposed CMS rules on ACOs and the MSSP have the following Federal Register Citation: 76 FR 19528-01. Comments close June 6, 2011. Enjoy.
