Boundless Way Zen Temple Opening and Dedication
May 3, 2011 at 12:34
My Zen temple was formally opened and the abbott installed on Saturday the 30th. It was a nice afternoon with a lot of Zen liturgical forms that you normally don't see in daily Zen practice. It was also a great afternoon as many representatives of neighboring faith traditions attended: Catholic nuns and priests, religious from other Buddhist temples in Worcester and, members of the local Congregationalist Church. One of the teachers has a post up with pictures and the remarks of the President.
The history of Zen in the United States and the West generally is complicated. Boundless Way is unique in that it is consciously adapting Zen in a mindful way for the United States. Mostly, I have found that the changes are all organizational and that traditional Zen practices and forms are still central. Organizational in that Boundless Way is not a strict hierarchical top-down system and instead incorporates significant lay leadership in the management of the organziation. On the practice side there are very few changes except the Temple is not strictly Soto or Rinzai, instead having elements of both. There is a lot about Boundless Way on their website and included in the remarks linked above.
