Robert Sullivan on 10 Things Embarrassing Things About Boston
May 24, 2011 at 12:00 I would agree with much of what he said but disagree vehemently about City Hall. The problem with City Hall is that citizens and workers don't adapt themselves to it and gripe. Granted, the square needs work but tearing down one of the most iconic examples of Brutalism doesn't seem reasonable. With proper maintenance and care of the building, you wouldn't have the problem.

Thanks for the link, Jason! I don't think we're that far apart on City Hall, since I think that adapting to it is far more practical than replacing it. It is pleasingly striking from a short distance (say, a few blocks down on Tremont Street). It's when you see the base of the building up close that you think, "This looks like it was dropped from space and all the surrounding buildings shrank from it in horror."
And I do think shrinking from things in horror is an overused Boston reaction.
